A more modern version of orienteering is Geocashing. It is where you use a GPS to find certain cashes that are placed out in hiding spots. To find out where the cashes are you just visit Geocashing.com and enter in the zip code. This type of activity has been around for some time but has just become popular in the past few years. Here in Ellensburg alone there are dozens of cashes. I think this is a great idea because phones even now- a-days have GPS on them so it can be fairly simple to do this activity individually. I think that a class would like doing this because it is fun and it’s a type of a scavenger hunt and I have yet to meet anyone who does not enjoy scavenger hunts. Also, it someone was to put on a pedometer while Geocashing, they would get surprisingly a lot of steps in. The only down fall of Geocashing in a classroom is that GPS’s can get expensive and the school might not have the budget for providing a class with a set of them. Although, if possible I would enjoy having this activity in my classroom and being able to do something different.
